From Pumpkins to Compost: Embracing the Fall Leaf Season
As the crisp autumn air replaces the warmth of summer, we bid adieu to the Halloween season and its iconic pumpkins. But fear not, for nature has another spectacular show in store: the vibrant tapestry of falling leaves. While some might view this as a chore, we've learned to appreciate the beauty and bounty that this seasonal transformation brings. I like spring and summer the most but fall has it good points here and there for me.
Our Feathered Friends and the Falling Leaves
Our feathered companions have distinct opinions about the leaf-fall. Our roosters, with their territorial nature, seem to view the rustling leaves as an invasion. They emit a chorus of low growls, guarding their domain from the seemingly encroaching foliage. On the other hand, our hens find pure joy in the leaf-covered ground. They scratch and peck with abandon, unearthing hidden treasures while transforming the yard into a feathery playground.
Leaf Management: A Balancing Act
While we relish the visual delight of autumn leaves, we've discovered that they can present challenges. Once the leaves become wet, they have a tendency to harbor mold, which can be detrimental to our birds health. To prevent this, we diligently clean up the leaves after rain showers. However, dry leaves are a different story. Our chickens love them, and we've found that they can be a valuable addition to our compost bins. Leaf mold alone can be good for composting but not for our nosey hens to munch on and believe me my hens will try to taste anything that hits the ground.
Nature's Gold: Composting Leaves
Composting leaves is a fantastic way to enrich your soil. The carbon-rich material they provide balances the nitrogen-rich elements from other compost ingredients. To incorporate leaves into our compost, we simply layer them with kitchen scraps, grass clippings, and other organic matter. Over time, these materials break down, creating nutrient-dense compost that nourishes our garden. It's also been a haven for earthworms as they have been seen here and there enjoying the goodness of the compost bins we have here. All around goodness for what we need.
So, while we say goodbye to pumpkins and embrace the colorful spectacle of autumn leaves, we're also mindful of the practical aspects of leaf management. By understanding our chickens' preferences, preventing mold issues, and harnessing the power of composting, we're able to fully appreciate the beauty and bounty of this wonderful season.
