Clucky Chronicles: Hatching Quail, Ducky Arrivals, and a Rooster Retreat!
Hey there, fellow chicken enthusiasts! Crissy O here, back with a coop update overflowing with feathery friends (and soon-to-be-feathery friends)! Buckle up, because things are getting exciting at Clucky O's!
The Bobwhite Quail Bunch
First up, we've welcomed a brand new feathered family to the coop: a gaggle of bobwhite quail chicks! These little peckers hatched just a few weeks ago, and let me tell you, they are adorable. They're all fluff and cheeps right now, but I can't wait to watch them grow into the stunning little birds they're meant to be.
Adding quail to the coop has been a fun way to diversify the flock. They're a great addition for anyone looking for some low-maintenance egg layers (their eggs are tiny but mighty tasty!) and excellent insect control in the run. Plus, watching them zip around is endlessly entertaining.
Ducky Dreams Do Come True!
Speaking of new arrivals, we've also got a shipment of baby ducks! This time around, we decided to forgo straight breeds and opted for an assortment of girl egg laying ducklings. We can't wait to see what kind of colorful characters end up waddling around the coop!
Raising ducks is a whole different experience from raising chickens, so I'm brushing up on my waterfowl knowledge. Luckily, there are tons of great resources out there, to helpful online communities plus where we ordered these sweet girls from is probably one of the best I've dealt with. You can check them out at Metzer Farms in Cordova Tennessee!
Rooster Relaxation Retreat
Now, with all these new feathered ladies gracing the coop, it's important to make sure our roosters, Lynn, Carolyn, Bobby, Denise, Charlie and Heather have a place to chill out. Let's face it, roosters can be a bit...persistent. And while they are handsome guys, the constant jiggling can be a bit much for the hens, especially during these long summer days.
To create a rooster retreat, we're building a chicken wire run into a bachelor pad just for them. It'll have everything a rooster needs to stay happy and healthy: food, water, a comfy roost, and a dust bath area. This way, we all can get some peace and quiet, and the hens can enjoy a little stress-free time too.
