Clucking Chaos: Operation Break Up Broody and Keep Our Roos in Line!

Clucking Chaos: Operation Break Up Broody and Keep Our Boys in Line!

Hey chickadees, Crissy O here, back with a clucking conundrum! We've got a case of cuddle puddle fever in the coop – broody hen overload! Now, don't get me wrong, watching our girls get all mama-mode is adorable, but with all this nesting and napping, things are getting a little... tense.

Remember Lynn, our resident security guard rooster? Yeah, let's just say his charm offensive isn't winning over these broody babes. They're not interested in his fancy footwork, just focused on becoming the best darn moms ever. But all this frustration cooped up together is a recipe for feather-flying fights!

So, it's time for Operation Break Up Broody! We needed to create a zen hatching haven for our soon-to-be mamas, and keep Lynn and the bachelor brigade from getting any, ahem, broody idea of egg eatin'.

Here's how this chick-flick unfolds:

Step 1: Coop Confessions – Identifying the Broody Bunch

First things first, gotta identify our cuddle monsters. Broody hens get broody – they spend all day on the nest, neglecting even the most tempting treats (sorry, scrumptious scratch!). They might even get grumpy and hiss if you try to pull them off the nesting box. We're looking for these cuddle champions and giving them a first-class upgrade! Well not so much of an upgrade but if you're keeping up with our youtube vlogs you know that we moved Nanny and Dale over to “rooster bachelor pad” turned broody pad.

Step 2: Building a Broody BnB (because luxury hatches chicks, right?)

We set up a separate hatching haven outside the coop. Think spacious pen with comfy nesting boxes, fresh bedding for the ultimate spa treatment, and a shaded area for those hot summer days. This way, our broody girls can get their mama-on in peace and quiet. We even installed an outdoor fan that blows directly into the broody box of their choice.

Step 3: The Great Coop Shuffle (with minimal feather ruffling)

Now comes the, ahem, fun part. Time to gently escort our broody babes to their new digs. Be warned, they might be a little resistant to leaving their beloved nest. Patience is key, chickadees! A comfy hug and swift walk next door to the new broody pen and gently placing her eggs down will be your best bet. Walk away and let the mama hen take over. Be sure to lock the gate behind you and she will do her nesting on her own no need to help.

Step 4: Life After Love (for Lynn at least)

With our broody bunch safely tucked away, it's smooth sailing for Lynn and the boys. The coop is back to its usual bustling self, and our soon-to-be mamas can enjoy some well-deserved R&R before their little bundles of fluff arrive. I do hope they hatch something anything even if it's 1 or 2 chicks just to see who the best mama is.

Bonus Tip: While our broody bunch enjoys their spa retreat, don't forget to collect any eggs they leave behind in the coop! These can be placed under a broody hen (with her permission, of course) or even incubated for a future episode of Hatch Day Shenanigans!

So there you have it, chickadees! Operation Break Up Broody – a success! Now, all that's left to do is wait for the pitter-patter of tiny chicks and watch our broody bunch become the best mamas ever. Stay tuned for adorable chick pics coming soon! Cluckingly yours,
