Clucking Crazy in Love: Valentine's Day in the Chicken Yard

Valentine's Day in the chicken yard was heating up faster than a broody hen on a hot day. The air was thick with anticipation, or maybe it was just the lingering scent of last night's spilled corn. But amidst the usual pecking order drama, a true love story was unfolding.

NanaRoo, the alpha rooster (and let's be honest, a bit of a show-off), had his sights set on Tam, the most glamorous hen in the yard. Her feathers were always perfectly fluffed, and she had a certain "je ne sais quoi" that made all the other hens fluffy with envy.

NanaRoo was pulling out all the stops. He'd been practicing his most impressive crow, fluffing his missing tail feathers until they looked like an electrified peacock's, and even attempting a rather pathetic little dance that involved a lot of hopping and some questionable fancy dancing. For a short time he thought he was a Cluck-in-Dale's dancer.

But NanaRoo wasn't the only one with his eye on Tam. There was Lynn, the resident security guard. Lynn was all muscle and intimidation, with a crow that could curdle milk. He'd been trying to woo Tam with "gifts" – mostly shiny pieces of poultry grit and the occasional discarded worm or broken twig.

And then there was Bobby, the Derp Roo. Poor Bobby. He was a bit of a klutz, always tripping over his own feet and getting himself stuck in things. He'd tried to impress Tam with a serenade, which mostly consisted of a series of awkward squawks and a rather unfortunate incident involving a muddy puddle. He tried to offer her part of a torn paper plate but she dissed him yet again. He's pretty to look at but that's pretty much it.

Tam, bless her feathered heart, was trying her best to remain impartial. NanaRoo was certainly the most charismatic, but Lynn offered security (and let's be honest, a bit of intimidation factor never hurt). And Bobby, well, Bobby was just so endearing in his own bumbling way. Tam already had been on a few jiggling dates with NanaRoo but nothing much more than that and not even a nice meal worm before hand.

The day of Valentine's Day dawned, and the tension in the yard was palpable. NanaRoo strutted around, puffing out his chest and attempting to look nonchalant. Lynn patrolled the perimeter, glaring at any rooster who dared to get too close to Tam. And Bobby, bless his clumsy soul, tripped over a stray corn cob and landed right in a pile of chicken turds.

Finally, the moment of truth arrived. NanaRoo, with a flourish, presented Tam with a particularly plump worm. Lynn, with a grunt, offered her a nice brown leaf. And Bobby, covered in manure, presented her with a single, bedraggled feather.

Tam looked at the offerings, then at the three suitors. NanaRoo, the charmer. Lynn, the protector. Bobby, the endearingly hopeless. She was not impressed with the attempted jiggling of Lynn or Bobby who chose the wrong end and nearly kinked up her neck for weeks. Oh who shall she choose for her Valentine?

And then, to everyone's surprise, Tam pecked NanaRoo on the noggin.

The yard erupted in a chorus of clucks and squawks. Lynn was speechless. Bobby, meanwhile, was so stunned he almost fainted.

And so, Valentine's Day in the chicken yard ended with an unexpected twist. Love, it seemed, had a funny way of choosing the most jiggle worthy for Tam, And Bobby, the Derp Roo, eventually won the heart of Russ who was in full molt and looked like a patchy rag doll. She snuggled up to Bobby with her prickly newly developing feathers and Bobby ran off with her behind the food barrel like he won a goldfish at the fair.

Moral of the story: True love, like a good mud bath, can be messy and unpredictable. And sometimes, it's the clumsy ones who win in the end.
