Hey clucking coop enthusiasts! Buckle up, because Crissy O here is about to take you on a wild ride – the coop expansion rodeo! We've all been dreaming of giving our feathered friends a bit more room to roam, and let me tell you, dreams do come true (with a sprinkle of sweat, some serious teamwork, and maybe a bucketful of laughter).
Step One: The Concrete Canvas
First things first, we had to create a solid foundation for our future coop castle. Picture this: a scorching summer day, the sun beating down like a sassy hen protecting her chicks. There we were, armed with shovels, wheelbarrows, and enough concrete mix to make a Roman road (well, maybe a chicken-sized Roman road).
Let me tell you, mixing concrete is a workout! It's like a giant, gritty playdough session for grown-ups. But hey, the satisfaction of seeing that smooth, level concrete pad forming? Pure magic (and a great excuse to grab a celebratory ice cream cone afterwards). Well, maybe it was more like lumpy bumpy concrete but it got the job done so who cares! I held the water hose, My middle son mixed and the hubby poured and smoothed as best we could. The oldest stood watch and kept NanaRoo out of the wet concrete and the other nosey bunch were ushered into the expansion with fans, water, food and enough mealworms to choke a large goose!
Step Two: The Metal Marvel Arrives
Fast forward a few days (and a few more ice cream cones), and the big day arrived – shed fram day! This wasn't your average garden shed, folks. This was a majestic metal marvel, destined to become the ultimate coop expansion. The whole family were pros, maneuvering that beast onto the concrete pad section by section frame by frame panel by panel (though let's be honest, it probably weighed more than all our chickens combined!). We managed to get that thing put in place piece by piece with tons of scrapes, cuts and bruises to make anyone proud of our work! Pre-planning took some time and measurements were sketchy but hey do these chickens care about all that? No they don't! Let's face it I'm only here as the snackie maker and delivery of things I can physically do and although it may not seem like much a little bit goes a long way.
Step Three: The (Not-So-Silent) Assembly Symphony
Now, picture this: a symphony of clanging metal, misplaced screws, and maybe a few (okay, several) colorful exclamations. Yep, that was the soundtrack to our shed assembly adventure. It wasn't always smooth sailing, but with a little teamwork, some deciphering of cryptic instructions (seriously, those diagrams!), and a whole lot of laughter, the metal masterpiece started taking shape. We suffered bug bites, ant bites and the occassional chicken leg bite and sprayed as much deep woods off as humanly possible without poisoning ourselves to avoid more welp itchiness.
The (Almost) Finished Product
We're not quite clucking crows from the rooftops just yet, but let me tell you, the coop expansion is looking incredible! The concrete pad is solid and crooked as my spine, the metal walls are gleaming (well, they will be once we clean off all the muddy handprints!), and the chickens are already peering through the gaps, their little beaks practically watering at the thought of all the extra space. NanaRoo has failed us in several inspections and he was removed from the area a dozen times for crowing in my face because he couldn't get to the meal worm feast first!
We've still got some work to do – nesting boxes to build, things to attach, and maybe some fun decorations to add some personality – but that's all part of the coop-tastic fun! Stay tuned for more updates as our chicken palace reaches its final clucking glory. In the meantime, if you're planning your own coop expansion, remember: a little sweat, a lot of laughter, and a whole heap of chicken love is the perfect recipe for success!
