Hey there, chicken enthusiasts! Summer is in full swing, and while we might be enjoying some refreshing ice cream, our feathered friends can struggle in the heat and humidity. But fear not, coop commanders! With a few simple adjustments, you can keep your flock happy, healthy, and laying those delicious eggs throughout the hot months.

Cooling Down the Coop

  • Amp Up the Airflow: Make sure your coop has plenty of ventilation. Open windows and doors on opposite sides to create a cross breeze. If possible, consider adding electric fans for additional air circulation.
  • Shade is Key: Direct sunlight beating down on your coop can be brutal. Provide ample shade with trees, shade cloth, or a tarp over the run. Aim for at least half of the run to be shaded during the hottest part of the day.
  • Cool and Comfy Bedding: Swap out deep litter bedding for a thinner layer during the summer. Opt for materials that absorb moisture well, like wood shavings or rice hulls. This will help prevent ammonia buildup and keep the coop feeling cooler.
  • Frozen Treats: Who doesn't love a popsicle on a hot day? Your chickens will appreciate frozen treats too! Freeze fruits and vegetables like watermelon or cucumber chunks in ice cube trays or hollowed-out gourds. They'll stay cool while enjoying a tasty snack.
  • Freeze Water: Use cleaned out milk jugs, add water, freeze then cut the plastic top half off and sit them in front of the fans. The chickens will peck at the ice and you can add in blueberries for them to find and enjoy as it melts.
  • Water Misters: Find some cheap water mister tubing or create your own and let the flock get a little misty spray above a fan and cool down.

Keeping Your Flock Hydrated

  • Fresh, Cool Water: This is a no-brainer! Ensure your chickens have access to clean, cool water at all times. Provide multiple waterers in different locations around the coop and run, and check them frequently to refill and clean as needed.
  • Electrolytes for the Win: Adding a pinch of electrolytes to their water can help replenish essential minerals lost through sweating. Talk to your local veterinarian or farm store for recommendations on poultry electrolyte supplements.
  • Oregano leaves: Add in oregano leaves to the watering containers to help with slime build up in the humidity.

Bonus Tips:

  • Limit Midday Activity: If possible, minimize coop cleaning or playtime during the hottest part of the day. This will help reduce stress on your flock.
  • Dust Bath Delights: A good dust bath is essential for chickens all year round, but especially in the summer. It helps keep their feathers clean and free of mites, which can irritate their skin in hot weather. Provide a dust bath area with a mixture of sand and ash (ensure the ash is from untreated wood).

By following these tips, you can ensure your feathered friends stay cool, comfortable, and productive throughout the summer. Remember, a happy and healthy flock means more delicious eggs for you to enjoy!
