Rainy Days and Duck Delight
There’s nothing quite like the sight of my ducks splashing in the yard when the rain starts tapping on the roof. Tracee, with her sleek green head, leads the charge, quacking like a cheerleader as the first drops fall. Vickie and JaneLily follow, their little webbed feet pattering across the grass, while Monique, the quiet strategist, scopes out the perfect puddle. Mollie May and Sherrie Dee bring up the rear, their fluffy tails bobbing with excitement. Out of their enclosures, they transform the yard into a watery wonderland, and it warms my heart to see them so free.
These ducks adore their pool time in the rain. I’ve set up a kiddie pool that quickly overflows with runoff, turning it into a muddy spa. Tracee dives in headfirst, sending waves that soak Vickie, who retaliates with a playful splash. JaneLily paddles in circles, her gentle quacks sounding like a lullaby, while Monique floats serenely, occasionally dipping her bill to nibble at floating leaves. Mollie May and Sherrie Dee team up, chasing raindrops like they’re duck-sized treasure, their laughter (yes, ducks laugh in their own way!) echoing through the yard. It’s pure, unscripted joy, and I can’t help but grin watching them.
Why Rain Brings Out Their Best
Ducks are built for water, and rain taps into their wild roots. In nature, they’d forage and swim in ponds, so my yard becomes their playground when the skies open. The rain softens the ground, making it easier to dig for worms—Monique’s favorite treat—while the cool drops keep them comfortable in August’s humidity. I’ve noticed their feathers gleam brighter after a good soak, a sign of healthy preening. Letting them out isn’t just fun; it’s a boost to their spirits and mine. Seeing Tracee nudge Vickie toward a deeper puddle or Sherrie Dee splash Mollie May with a wing flap feels like a little duck family reunion.
Of course, I keep an eye out. A quick check ensures no hawks are circling, and I’ve got a sheltered spot ready if the storm turns wild. But most days, it’s all giggles and quacks. JaneLily once waddled over to me, dripping wet, and rested her head against my leg—a duck hug that melted my heart. These moments remind me why I started this homestead journey.
A Heartwarming Lesson
My ducks teach me to embrace the unexpected. Rain might dampen plans, but for Tracee, Vickie, JaneLily, Monique, Mollie May, and Sherrie Dee, it’s a celebration. Their love for freedom and each other inspires me to let go and enjoy life’s splashes. If you’re thinking of adding ducks to your yard, start small—a pool and some space—and watch the magic unfold. They don’t need much, just a chance to waddle and splash.
